white laces

Saw White Laces play at Unicorn Manor the other night.  It was a solid set and I approve of this new band!

We took it upon ourselves to design something for them.

Most the time, when you’re on a phone tree and you push a wrong button, the quasi-british female robot chimes in to tell you your entry was invalid.

Our work voicemail takes a much simpler approach at letting you know you fucked up.

Always Guilted

Whenever I see older, stodgy men in public places wearing frowns, I always check out their ring fingers. When I don’t see a band I feel bad because this usually means they’re without a loving and caring spouse. My next feeling is guilt; guilt for being so much younger but having a significant other I adore.

In reality, the majority of these men are probably divorced and welcome the solitude, independence, and free flowing masturbation that late 40s singledom likely allows. But I still can’t shake that guilt.

Epic Fail Epic Snail

Yesterday @definetigers and I drew this picture on a bar napkin around 4pm.  Oh isn’t the ex post facto realization that foreshadowing has taken place exciting!  Because in just 5 short hours from when pen hit paper and created the above, I’d be watching the season finale of True Blood.  And in 6 short hours I’d be bitching about the season finale of True Blood.  Then a discourse on the Epic Fail Epic Snail of it.

Before I rant I must give TB cred for finishing up major plot lines in the finale; however, I never for a moment doubted that would happen.  Season 1 was all wrapped up and neatly bound with the brutal murder of serial killer Rene Lenier, so it’s likely season 2 would follow suit.  And besides, TB writers aren’t foolish.  They understand that sometimes you must answer the major questions and bring the main resolution.  This does not diminish the show but rather opens it up to a new nemesis for the subsequent season.  One that will presumably blindside the now placated, recently shiny happy, people of Bon Temps.  TB needs that tabula rosa for next season, they don’t want to continue with a tired maenad; because with TB the laws of physics rarely apply so a new “big bad” is boundless.

But now my beef.  The Epic Snail is certainly the last half hour which was slow and devoted to both the fall of Eggs (good riddance if you ask me) and the (pejoratively) saccharine dinner between Sookie and Bill.  Of course there was plenty of good in the episode; we got a few new tidbits of information.  Some back-story on Lafayette selling V, Sam ventures to learn why he wasn’t ever a real boy, and then Jessica eats some honky in a big rig.  Wanted a bit more Eric, but really, when don’t I?  And with true TB charm these scenes were tied together with the bad accents we love spouting words of redneck comradery.

But we still have the Epic Fail, which to me, is that the episode’s major cliffhanger is the kidnapping of the most boring character on the show.  When Lafayette was stolen at the end of Season 1 (yeah remember that same ending) I was worried and anxious that he might not be coming back!  I nearly bargained with a vengeful god to take me instead.  Can’t say I’m having that same reaction now…

(ps, I do have a little heartburn with the “saw it coming a mile away” death of Maryann by a shifted Sam, but whatever, I can get behind a just desserts storyline if done well).

I understand that the writers likely intended for the last half of the finale to be a mellow narrative aimed at planting seeds.  So I will watch the episode again and will try to enjoy it more.  Or I’ll watch it again to further dissect any nuances and possible plot twists.

new thing I learned about the world

Sand Mandalas.  So this might be common knowledge to others, but wasn’t to me.  However the fact I’m not Buddhist I believe is a proper defense as to why I wasn’t aware of these goings ons.  Sand Mandalas are essentially a Tibetan ritual involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made out of colored sand for religious purposes.  But tradition and spirituality aside, these things are simply amazing works of art.  The detail and techniques are incredible.  Plus, the kid in me appreciates the fact they are destroyed afterward (its akin to the lego construction and deconstruction of my youth).  Here’s the wikipedia page if you want to read more.

new chairs

Spent labor day refinishing a couple of bar stools in my kitchen.  Formerly maple with a wine cushion they are now black with a sage cushion.  They were freebies from a friend (hunted for bar stools for weeks, surprisingly difficult to find reasonably prices ones).  Wanted to remove the curve in the back of the chair but my jigsaw blade wasn’t to be found.  Guess that deco is here for the time being. & kitchen.

doesn’t look sage but it is.
